Rita’s “Recipe”

A reader named Rita wrote me about the solution she and her husband found for getting rid of a biting bug problem. I am always so encouraged when I hear a success story, and especially when someone takes time to explain the path they took along the way before they succeeded.

Sometimes I find it more helpful to get a whole “prescription” or “recipe” for what to do rather than separate random tips. It helps me decide which things to choose from if I can see how everything fits together. Rita’s solution is like that – a whole routine that worked for them.

I really appreciate Rita and her husband for sharing this with me and giving me permission to share it with others. Our conversation occurred by email and I’m not including my part of it. Mostly I asked lots of questions; Rita was patient and answered all of them☺ (by the way, I put some of her tips that stood out to me in bold)

Here’s her original comment (posted over here):

Hello, I have been reading the posts about the biting mites. I caught these mites almost a year ago from my outdoor bird feeders. My husband came down with them 3 months after I did. We went through many doctors and loads of pyrethrum cream which did not work.

I seem to have gotten rid of the bugs by a simple and not so costly way. We have no bites marks and no longer feel the pin-prick or the crawling of the bugs. For the past 53 days we have been:

-Putting one cup of clorox in our bath water each and every night. After towel drying off we touched each bite mark with straight clorox on a q-tip.

-Then we would put a product called Sulfur 8 all over our body including scalp. Go to bed and that was the end of the bugs. [Rita also mentions later that she used Iodine in her hair - see below for more about that]

-For the rooms we dusted down the carpets with 10% Sevin dust. Also put it in the cars.

-Right at dark I would put little tea candles on top of saucers turned upside down and let the candle burn for 2 hours each night. I put the tea candles in the cars also.

Now we feel no movement in our bedrooms or in the cars. I am still doing this every night because I have been fighting this for almost a year now and this is the first time anything has “worked”.

All we know is that clorox kills these mites or bugs or whatever they are. Sevin dust kills them also. We sweep the floors and beds every 3 days and put down fresh sevin dust on both. It is so good to see bite free skin and to no longer feel those things crawling on us. I hope this helps everyone who has been fighting these things.

Rita

I wrote back asking what sulfur 8 was, what the tea candles were for, etc. Here’s Rita’s reply:

Hello Shannon,

Yes you can share anything that I say. Your first question was about the sulfur 8. The sulfur 8 is a hair care product. I think people of color use it. Anyway it contains 2% sulfur plus menthol. We buy ours at Wal-Mart and Walgreen’s. It is in the hair care products.

We put it all over us including our scalp. You have to use Dawn dishwashing detergent to bathe with because it is the only thing we have found that will cut the grease of the sulfur 8. The worse part about using this is it is so greasy. Also it makes you feel very cold for about an hour after you put it on. We have to put it on, then go straight to bed. After about an hour we don’t feel cold any more just very greasy….ugh!

Your second question (about the tea candles): I read on one site where mites can sense body heat for up to 20 feet away. So I thought, “I need to trick them into going toward something warm that isn’t our bodies.”

Now my carpet in the bedrooms is covered with new Sevin dust every three days, and so is our mattresses.

I put four tea candles on top of saucers turned upside down on the floor. One candle is on each seat in our cars. We start these candles right at dark and we set a timer so we don’t forget them and burn them for 2 hours every night before we go to bed. 4 candles to a room.

Also we switch bedrooms every 12 to 14 days. I live in a 4 bedroom house so we can switch bedrooms often. We buy our tea candles at Wal-Mart. They come in a big bag.

The Clorox question was next. Yes, I did see a difference after I used the Clorox. You have to use Clorox brand bleach…not the cheap stuff. The cheaper brands of bleach use a different chemical in them and it will burn you skin. Now, when you first use the bleach straight it will burn and sting for about 7 to 8 minutes really bad if it is placed where the mites are.

Try to stand it. If you can’t stand to leave it on till it dries try to leave it on for at least 2 to 3 minutes then wash it off. Stand up in the bath tub with the bath tub full of water and put the Clorox on your body where the rash is. If the burning gets too bad you can sit down into the water and get instant relief.

What we have discovered is that our skin only turns red, stings or burns from the bleach only where the mites are. If there are no mites the bleach feels like we are just pouring water over our skin. If the skin turns red like a sunburn or burns or stings…then the mites are there.

Also, where the skin feels like sand paper, that means the mites are there. Take a Q-tip dipped into the straight bleach and run it onto where the sand paper feeling is on the skin. Let the bleach dry and then apply the sulfur 8. The next morning the skin will feel better.

The sulfur 8 along with the bleach seems to kill these mites. I learned to use sulfur from researching “new mites” and found a site where a new mite appeared in 2005 and was getting on horses. The people that take care of the horses said that they were having the best luck with sulfur. I thought, “Well, if it will work on horses I might as well try it also.”

I see a doctor at the V.A. Medical center and he admitted to me last month that there is some type of mite that is coming from the birds or the squirrels that is doing this to people. Nothing that the doctors have given me has really helped. But with the bleach, sulfur 8 and Blue star ointment and iodine my skin is now clear. No new bites and no itching…thank God.

I had to use iodine on my scalp to kill off the things up there. After the iodine dries then I go over my scalp with sulfur 8 and tie my hair up for the night. No itching, no bites. What is great is that when we go into a “new” bedroom we no longer feel any movement once we lay down.

After almost a year of fighting these things I think we are almost at the end of the horrible road. I only hope that the cold temps kill what is out in the yard. We put 3 hundred pounds of sevin pellets out in the back yard and 2 hundred pounds in the front yard before winter set in.

Seems everyone that has come down with these bugs have come into contact with birds, squirrels or has a pet in the house. We spent $7000.00 dollars trying to get our little dogs over this but we had to put them down. The mites were on their skin and in their ears. They were dipped for 8 weeks and took shots of invermectin for 14 weeks. Nothing helps.

We put them down and cried for weeks. This has been one of the worst things that has ever hit our family. It seems to be spreading across the country. I just hope that what we have found that works can be shared with everyone fighting these things. It has worked for us better than any of the poisons that we used for months.

If I can help in any other way just let me know. I live in Illinois and I know that this has spread from New York all the way to California.

I replied once more with a few questions and here is Rita’s last reply:

Hello Shannon,

I am so sorry to hear about your child. My heart has gone out to everyone who has children and are living in this nightmare of mites. My sons and grandchildren haven’t been in my house since May of this year. We spent all the holidays alone. Our family stood out in the street and talked to us while my husband and I stood on the sidewalk in front of our house. This is truly beginning to feel like a plague.

I wanted to send you this link:

http://www.lesspub.com/cgibin/site.pl?433&cgThread_threadID=18896

This is a site that I found several months ago. They have discovered a new mange mite that is attacking horses. The only thing that changed around this barn was a new horse that was brought in from the V.A. Since I don’t know what type of mite we are fighting I try to keep information on all new mites that I can find info on.

The iodine that I buy isn’t any particular brand. It comes in the little 1 oz. bottles. I get mine at Walgreen’s. The Betadine solution that comes in the big 8 oz bottle doesn’t seem to be strong enough to kill what ever this is. The Betadine says it has only 1% iodine available. The little bottles have 2 % iodine.

I have taken cotton balls and put the iodine all over where the rash was. I have put the iodine into an old eye dropper bottle so that I could slowly pour the iodine on my scalp. The iodine left on over night really helps kill them in the hair and scalp. I have cut up several of my husbands old tee shirts and after I put the iodine on my scalp I let it air dry for about 20 minutes and then wrap my head up in the piece of tee shirt and sleep that way.

After about 3 to 4 days of doing this every night you should notice a great improvement with the itch and feeling of movement. But…..I also have the one cup of Clorox brand bleach in my water. I have never suffered any type of burn from the bleach bath.

The cars….we put the sevin dust into an old sock. Then I would drop the sock inside the cars and it would “poof” the sevin dust all over the inside of the cars. We left the sevin dust in the cars for weeks and weeks. We put clean sheets on the seats each time we went some where.

Then right at dark, we set out little tea candles that we buy in big bags from Wal-Mart out on each seat set on top of upside down cup saucers. To protect the seats from the heat of the tea candles and to make it easier for those little bugs to crawl up on to the candles and get stuck in the wax. The little tea candles seem to work so well because the entire wax melts as the candles burn. The mites must get in the wax as they hunt for the source of heat. We have really noticed a big change since we started burning the candles.

Even though we switch bedrooms every 12 to 14 days we no longer feel anything when we lay down at night to sleep. We set a timer for 2 hours and we burn the candles in the cars and all bedrooms with 4 candles to a room, right at dark, for those 2 hours. I think the bugs are searching for heat. The candles seem to be working.

I will try to find some of those old sites I went to where they described how to take a bleach bath for skin parasites. The one measuring cup per bath seems to work great. I lay completely down in this solution. It doesn’t burn my face or the inside of my ears. My hair gets really dry but I have found one type of hair conditioner that counteracts the dryness…it is Pantene conditioner.

My husband and I still burn the candles every night. We still take the bleach bath every night. We still put the sulfur 8 on every night…..we are so afraid to stop the “routine” because of the great fear that these bugs will get started on our skin again. I have a feeling that I will be paranoid about this for the rest of my life. Having to kill our little precious dogs over a bug is something that I will never get over.

I don’t think the doctors realize that this is not something that we can “just live with”. This has to be attacked and hit and hit hard.

Please know that I will answer any questions. I have tried to remember all the little things we do that I don’t really think about any more….I just do them….like bringing our pillows down every morning and putting them in to our deep freezer. The pillows that were put in there from the night before are taken out and those pillows are put into the dryer for 50 minutes on high. We have four sets of pillows that we use and we rotate these pillows every single night.

If I had this to do over again, I would have disassembled all our beds, and bought several of those air mattresses. Those things can be placed in a shower stall and washed down with bleach solution every single day. As it stands now….I have four bedrooms that I will have to replace the mattresses in when and if we feel safe to say that this nightmare is all over and only a memory.

Thanks for getting in touch with me. Please keep me in mind if you ever find out what these bugs are.

Until next time, Rita

Thank you so much, Rita and Mike.

I need to mention that I don’t know how safe bleach is or isn’t to use. I recommend that anyone thinking of trying this first research it themselves to make an informed decision.

As for us, since my husband and I already have a sort of “recipe” we’ve been following ourselves, and also since we have a toddler, which complicates things (since we’re concerned for her safety when it comes to products like bleach and Sevin dust), we haven’t decided which tips we will try. I’ll think and pray about it and gradually incorporate some of these things into what we are already doing. For myself I probably will try the bleach bath, but for my toddler, well, at this point, I wouldn’t be comfortable with that for her.

It is truly an encouragement to me that Rita shared this and that she filled in so many details for me. I hope it helps others, too. I think it really helps to hear other’s experiences and realize that there are many different creative ways to solve the same problem.

It doesnt’s seem right that Rita would have to put her dogs down. It appears that these mites are not species specific and you could go around killing squirrels, birds etc. to try and eliminate this problem, but lets face it if you can get rid of them on a human than the same has to be true for your pets! I have pets and refuse to put them down over a bug-no matter the fight I am in for.

Hi Shannon, and everyone in this bug battle, I appreciate all the sharing of your stories and the things you are doing to get rid of these creatures. It has been mindboggling for me about 14 years. Every type of pest control I tried has not worked, neither has scabies treatments. People keep telling me it is in my body that I need to detox and build my immune system. I am putting down De, tried Kleenfree enzymes(didn’t get rid of the problem). I am doing the salt/C treatment but have to watch my blood pressure as salt raises blood pressure. I mix strong black tea, Clorox and cinnamon tea in a sprayer and I spray it around the uncarpeted floors. I put out DE and cinnamon powder. Wipe my plastic covered mattress in this before getting in bed but I still can’t sleep. I am getting the products Shannon,Jacob and Rita have suggested. Last night I did all the usual ritual for trying to get sleep except I showered in dog shampoo Sulfadene contains coaltar and I rubbed Neem oil on my skin and in my hair and I was able to rest better. Neem is a magnificent tree with all kinds of healing properties. The best site for info was Neem Foundation. Neem can be rubbed on the body, taken internally and it is a natural insecticide and pesticide. There is Neem soap, lotion, oil leaves, capsules
May god bless us all, Mona

Hi… I saw you use iodine..Betadine is great. I used it for my head when it seemed to have bumps and cuts from bug bites on it . I did ask my pharmacist about it and he said it is dangerous to put it on your head. And that it can blind you if you get it in your eyes, I did get it in my eyes , it burned but I am not blind thank God. I then asked 5-6 pharmacists and they all agreed that it can build up in your system. They said it can cause a thyroid problem. I then asked each of them about Listerine on my scalp which itches badly from the bugs. Each thought kisterene would be much safer. Just a thought..Listerine really helps. But I don’t use it anymore. I soak in the tub for an hour with peanut oil poured in ( about 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup. it stops them dead. and lasts for days. On my head I soak it in conditioner. At first I used baby oil over my whole body, it seemed to cure it all , I went from 150 bites to 4 , then I did a google search on baby oil and realized its petroleum. I sensed a strong pain in my chest . I believe the baby oil caused it. So I switched to peanut oil and I have not had any pains.
Simply put bugs dont have snorkel gear. Drowning them works wonders. And cover anything that you think might have bugs on it with oil or spray wax polish, or paint. Brake cleaner works ok on paper, it is very deadly though. I perfer windex, especially on my cellphone. I have never been bit while holding it since I now spray the phone then wipe it right away. This phone used to be there home, I would get bit in the ear constantly before I started using Windex.
Keep the faith He is Good . His Mercy endures forever….all this bug stuff is nothing more than the enemy and his evil. Just like Job and his sores. The Lord gives and the Lord takes away, blessed be the name of the Lord
    God Bless you

By The way no mite will bite you if there is 10% sulfur and 90% Euecerin or cold creme on you. Plus it will kill any living on you to in 4 days on 3 days off and 3 more days on. They are not interested in sulfur at all and it is painless. No burning at all . but the eyes dont like it. This is the old time cure
I have no bites at all since I have started this treatment. Before I had hundreds
This link will cheer you up and inform you immensly. I have been cured ever since I read it. With out poisons.

    Hi John,

I wish knew an answer, but I don’t. I haven’t used sulfur extensively, but when I did use it, I didn’t notice it staying and not going away. We do wash everything we wear every single time we wear it. Since our clothes gets washed so frequently maybe that was enough to get the smell out. Hope you find a solution. Please share it if you do!

    Hello

I would like to ask rita or anyone that can answer my question. I wash my clothes everyday after wearing them and also my towels. As I dry off with the towels I seem to have the mites all over me. They will not die in dryer. They look like grains of salt and some look like black pepper. They will stick to anything like hard glue. What can I wash with that will kill the mites, I tried using borax and let soak for 30 minutes, then I will turn washer back on and continue washing. The dryer will not kill it either. What can I use in washer to kill the biting mites. please help.

  14. Shanlilac Says:

We have used PuraKleen by DermatechRX for laundry. If you google dermatech rx you can find it on their site. We think it works better than anything we have tried.

The second best thing we know of is to use ammonia and borax together – about a cup of each per load. If you add ammonia along with the borax you are currently using, that just might make the difference. I hope so and wish you well.

Dear shannon, I also have been fighting these blacks pepper mites, but believe I have found something that seems to work, and they cannot build-up a resistence. the product is called Cumarindine(google this). In it’s liquid form it penetrates well, into the skin. the ointment form seems to work better on the bites, particularly when sulfur powder is added. Along with the enzyme baths, I am about 95% better, but still working hard at it. I am personal friends with the owner of the Cumardine company, and know of their good character, and creditability. They make an excellent product. Best of luck, Bob Bridger

I found that intense prayer is crucial in having the strength to pursue these mites. I had bird mites and i believe they are finally gone after 2 mos. James 5:8 says the effectual and fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much! Keeping my family focused and believing in the perfect work of our savior became my main focus as day in day out our life just seemed miserable with these mites biting and crawling on us. after moving into a new house to purse Gods will for my life and leaving everything behind that meant so much, my wife, I, our 5 year old and 3 month old became the victims of this plague. It didn’t make sense as I know God to only give good gifts. Why couldn’t I do anything to bring comfort to my family. I broke down four times with the Lord and just pleaded for Him to supernaturally remove the mites. It was as if God asked me “will you still be my evangalist in spite of this..I said o.k. Then I said, “o.k. what are you trying to teach me as I know every trial to have a completing work (phil 1:6_) and it was as if God spoke to my spirit and said, “what if I’m not trying to teach you anything. What if I just want to display right living?” I said o.k., but you will have to show me how because it does not come “naturally” but ONLY when walking in the spirit. that is also the only way you will be able to “count it all joy” trust me. Remember Job was targeted for his righteousness and his testimony has affected so many lives over the last 5,000 years. I have learned that Gods grace is sufficient and I don’t just mean in some generic way as we all like to quote the verse from time to time. I began to really covet prayer from believers like I never did before. I knew I was stuck in this mite mess as I couldn’t sell my house to someone and escape. The stories only discouraged me as I learned of people who go through such great efforts just to cope with them, not even remove them entirely! PCO’s like terminex wont even spray for mites. my solution for mites, and the one that should be first on your list, is pray to the Lord Jesus Christ for relief. if you don’t know Him, start there. acknowledge that your sin seperates you from a holy God (Romans 3:23) as we are all born into bodies of sin (Thanks to Adam and Eve) And realize that you can pay for your own sins (Hell) or you can allow the only true mediater between God and man (Jesus Christ) to pay for them with the blood he spilled at calvary. The bible teaches that it is Gods will that every one would come to repentance!! Now how can you be forgiven for the sin that seperates you from a holy God that you will one day face. Glad you asked, Romans 10:13 says that “whosoever calls on the name of the Lord WILL be saved. you can’t earn salvation, but it is free for the asking!!! Don’t be seperated from the love of Jesus Christ by resisting his grace, call on His holy name today to save you from your sins. Because in light of eternity in Hell, the mites will be the least of your problems!!! I pray that you will come to salvation if you do not yet know Him. And I also pray that the Lord keep you strong until the mites are delivered one way or another. Get through this trial with King Jesus on your side!!!when you take a heavenly perspective it wont seem as bad.
    In Christ alone,
    Don Gutierrez

I have noticed that some are using the clorox. It will kill the mites but also place 11/2 to 2 cups epsom salt in one pint of water. After showering put this salt water all over your body. Then blow dry it on with a hair blow drier. Never use towels. Soak all clothing and bedding over night making sure they are completley submerged. We use large totes to place our clothing and bedding in and weight them down with old empty clorox bottles that we have filled with water. Taking 1 TBs of plain table salt by mouth will get them out of the nose, ears and body. I hope this helps. R

Has anyone tried vinegar in a spray bottle for your bedding, carpet and car? Vinegar kills ant, fleas and lice. You can shampoo with it, leaving it on for 10 min while you shower. Or put it on your head and leave it on while you have a shower cap on. Also, you can take a cheap bottle of shampoo, pour out just a little, and put a table spoon or so of Tea Tree Oil back in the shampoo bottle and shake to mix. Shampoo with it and leave it on 10 min or so while you shower or leave on with a shower cap on.

You can put Tea Tree Oil on your skin to kill the mites.

    Hope this helps someone.

I have felt so alone and desparate ! I can feel them crawling on my scalp and in my ears … and seems they are working their way down to upper torso. I have tried so many toxic things and even thought of shaving my head. Had to have my cat put down.
I have done the matress bags and pillow bags. Tea Tree oil, shampoo with dog flea and tick shampoo. borax in washer. Boric acid on the carpet and base boards..Bagged up the black flakes and irredesent flakes and took them to the dr to have analized …. one dr said “argentine ants” the other gave me vallume to help me sleep and that’s it !!! I felt hopeless till I found this web site. I will try all suggested and continue to pray .
I too felt that if someone had gone through the “hell on earth” that I am going through and found a cure or something to help,,,,they shouldn’t be charging for that information. They would know the desperation and isolation I feel and want to help others.
Thank you all for your input.
    God bless you !
    Beth
